It is easy to see why. DHT has a direct relationship with androgenetic alopecia, and reducing its effect can help slow hair loss in some people.<\/p>\n<p>Still, DHT is not simply a &#8220;<strong>bad hormone.<\/strong>&#8221; The body produces it naturally, and it has important roles at different stages of life. Problems tend to arise when certain tissues are especially sensitive to its effects. Hair follicles are a good example.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the relationship between <strong>DHT and hair loss<\/strong> makes it easier to understand why pattern baldness develops, why it runs in families, and why some treatments target DHT while others focus on stimulating hair growth.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_DHT_dihydrotestosterone\"><\/span><strong>What is DHT (dihydrotestosterone)?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dihydrotestosterone is an androgen, which means it belongs to the group of hormones involved in male sexual development and male physical characteristics. It is formed mainly from testosterone and produces strong effects in tissues that contain androgen receptors.<\/p>\n<p>DHT plays important roles in the prostate, skin, hair follicles and reproductive tissues. Although it is closely linked with male physiology, women also produce and respond to androgens. The amount and effect of DHT, however, differ between individuals and between tissues.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_the_body_produce_DHT\"><\/span><strong>How does the body produce DHT?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The body creates DHT when an enzyme called <strong>5-alpha-reductase<\/strong> converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. This process occurs in several tissues, including the prostate, skin and hair follicles.<\/p>\n<p>Two main forms of 5-alpha-reductase are especially relevant. Type 1 is found in areas such as the skin and sebaceous glands, while type 2 is strongly involved in the prostate and hair follicles. Type 2 activity has an important role in androgenetic alopecia.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_vs_testosterone_whats_the_difference\"><\/span><strong>DHT vs. testosterone, what&#8217;s the difference?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Testosterone and DHT are both androgens, but they do not behave in exactly the same way. Testosterone circulates throughout the body and supports many functions, including sexual development and male physical traits. Some testosterone is then converted into DHT inside specific tissues.<\/p>\n<p>DHT binds strongly to androgen receptors. This makes its effects particularly important in areas such as the prostate and genetically sensitive scalp follicles. In simple terms, testosterone acts as the starting material, while DHT produces a stronger androgen signal in certain tissues.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_DHT_do_in_the_body\"><\/span><strong>What does DHT do in the body?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The role of DHT changes throughout life. Its effects begin before birth and continue through puberty and adulthood. These effects are not limited to hair.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_during_fetal_development\"><\/span><strong>DHT during fetal development<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During male fetal development, DHT is essential for normal development of the external genitalia and prostate. Testosterone and DHT work together, but their roles are different. Testosterone is especially important for internal male reproductive structures, while DHT has a major role in external genital development.<\/p>\n<p>This becomes clear in people with 5-alpha-reductase type 2 deficiency. When the body cannot convert testosterone into enough DHT, development of the external genitalia can be affected.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_during_puberty\"><\/span><strong>DHT during puberty<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>DHT becomes more active again during puberty as androgen production increases. It contributes to changes such as facial and body hair growth and prostate development.<\/p>\n<p>It is also during and after puberty that genetically sensitive scalp follicles may begin responding to androgen activity. This helps explain why androgenetic alopecia usually appears after puberty rather than in childhood.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_in_adulthood\"><\/span><strong>DHT in adulthood<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In adulthood, DHT continues to influence androgen-sensitive tissues. It remains active in the prostate, skin and hair follicles.<\/p>\n<p>Its effects are highly dependent on the tissue involved. DHT can support beard and body hair growth while contributing to the gradual miniaturization of scalp hair follicles in people who are genetically prone to pattern hair loss. The response depends on hormone production, enzyme activity, androgen receptors and genetic sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>For hair loss in particular, the amount of DHT found in the bloodstream does not tell the whole story. A person may have a normal blood DHT result while still having scalp follicles that are highly sensitive to the hormone.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_and_androgenetic_alopecia_pattern_hair_loss\"><\/span><strong>DHT and androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>DHT has one of its best-known effects in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smilehairclinic.com\/en\/androgenetic-alopecia-male-pattern-baldness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>androgenetic alopecia<\/strong><\/a>, also called male pattern hair loss or female pattern hair loss.<\/p>\n<p>Affected areas of the scalp can show greater DHT activity, increased 5-alpha-reductase activity and more androgen receptor activity. Over time, susceptible hair follicles become smaller. The hairs they produce become progressively finer, shorter and less visible.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_and_benign_prostatic_hyperplasia_BPH\"><\/span><strong>DHT and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>DHT is also important in the prostate. The prostate contains substantial 5-alpha-reductase activity, allowing it to produce DHT locally.<\/p>\n<p>Androgen signaling contributes to prostate growth. For this reason, medicines that inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, including finasteride and dutasteride, are also used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in appropriate patients.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_and_prostate_cancer\"><\/span><strong>DHT and prostate cancer<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Androgens, including testosterone and DHT, activate androgen receptors in prostate cells. This signaling supports the growth of normal prostate tissue and plays an important role in many prostate cancers. This is why reducing androgen production or blocking androgen receptors forms part of treatment for several types of prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>However, having a high DHT blood result does not mean that someone has prostate cancer. DHT testing is not used by itself to diagnose prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DHT_and_PCOS\"><\/span><strong>DHT and PCOS<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Polycystic ovary syndrome, or <strong>PCOS<\/strong>, is commonly associated with increased androgen activity. This can contribute to acne, unwanted facial or body hair and scalp hair thinning.<\/p>\n<p>DHT may form part of androgen activity, but PCOS should not simply be described as a &#8220;high DHT condition.&#8221; Testosterone, DHEAS and other aspects of androgen production are also important. PCOS-related hair loss can appear around the crown, vertex or as more general thinning.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_happens_when_DHT_levels_are_too_low\"><\/span><strong>What happens when DHT levels are too low?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Very low DHT has its clearest effects when it occurs because of disorders involving 5-alpha-reductase. In genetically male fetuses, inadequate DHT can interfere with normal development of the external genitalia and prostate.<\/p>\n<p>Later in life, reduced DHT activity may be associated with less facial or body hair. Testosterone can still carry out many androgen functions, so low DHT does not necessarily cause a broad loss of all male characteristics.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_DHT_causes_hair_loss\"><\/span><strong>How DHT causes hair loss?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>DHT-related hair loss does not happen because DHT suddenly destroys healthy hair. The process is usually gradual.<\/p>\n<p>In genetically sensitive follicles, repeated androgen signaling changes the way the follicle grows. The follicle slowly becomes smaller and produces a weaker hair shaft. Eventually, the difference becomes visible as thinning.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_hair_growth_cycle_and_follicle_miniaturization\"><\/span><strong>The hair growth cycle and follicle miniaturization<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Scalp hair moves through a cycle that includes growth, transition, resting and shedding phases. The active growth phase is known as anagen.<\/p>\n<p>In androgenetic alopecia, sensitive follicles gradually miniaturize. Their growth phase becomes less productive, and newly produced hairs become finer. Starting a DHT-blocking medicine without confirming the cause of hair loss can delay the diagnosis of another condition.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prescription_DHT_blockers_finasteride_dutasteride\"><\/span><strong>Prescription DHT blockers (finasteride, dutasteride)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. Telogen effluvium, for example, can produce widespread shedding after a physical or metabolic stress.<\/p>\n<p>This is why treating every type of thinning as a DHT problem can lead to disappointing results.
